What a setup needs, and what we stock
A hydroponic setup is not one product. It is a system, a light, somewhere to start seeds, and usually somewhere to put the whole thing. This page is a plain account of what each part does, so you can work out what you actually need before you buy any of it.
The system
There are more system types than anyone needs to care about: wick, deep water culture, nutrient film technique, ebb and flow, drip and aeroponics. For growing at home, two of them matter.
Deep water culture suspends the roots in aerated nutrient solution. Nothing flows. An air pump keeps oxygen in the water, and that is the entire mechanism. It is the simplest way in and it survives a power cut, because the roots are already in the water. Our 11 cup system is $79.
Nutrient film technique runs a shallow stream of solution through a closed channel past the roots and back to a tank. It scales far better, and it depends on the pump: stop the flow and the channel drains. We sell it in two sizes, 36 cups at $169 and 108 cups across three tiers at $279.
The light
This is the part people underestimate. A system on a bright windowsill in June is fine. The same system in a back room in January will produce pale, stretched, disappointing plants.
Our LED grow light strips come nine to a pack, 90cm each, 18W each, and link together in series so one supply feeds the run. Strips rather than a panel because a row of plants wants a line of light, not a bright spot in the middle. $179 the pack.
If you are lighting one 11 cup system rather than a row, a single clip on grow lamp at $29 is the cheaper starting point.
Somewhere to start seeds
Seeds are germinated separately and moved into the system once they have a root. That means a propagator: a tray with drainage, a clear dome to hold humidity, and vents to let it out again as the seedlings harden off.
Our seed starter trays come five to a pack with catch trays, adjustable domes and labels, at $69. Five lets you sow in succession rather than all at once.
Somewhere to put it
A grow tent is optional and it solves real problems. It keeps your light on the plants instead of on the walls, gives you ports to run extraction and cables, and catches spills in a removable tray.
We sell two sizes, 47in square at $269 and 59in square at $319, both 78in tall. The 36 cup kit fits either, with room to work in the larger one. The 108 cup system is 55in wide and fits neither.
What you still have to buy elsewhere
None of our kits includes the reservoir tank, the nutrient solution, the growing medium or the seeds. That is normal for the trade and it is worth knowing before the box arrives rather than after.
A cheap pH pen and a bottle of pH down are the two extras that most improve results, and neither costs much.
